UPDATES COMING
Nathan is a typical 21 year old guy. Living life to the fullest. He just started out his career as a welder after recently graduating from a welding program. He is so responsible, actively looking for a home to purchase, and already has enough saved for a large down payment. He takes his health very seriously-daily trips to the gym, meal prepping, etc. He takes trips with friends exploring the world. He spends his time wisely, making himself and others around him happy. His family and his friends are very important to him and he will go to great lengths to help any of them.
That's why we were so shocked to find out that on June 3, 2021 he went into sudden cardiac arrest while he was taking a jog. He had only been running for less than 10 minutes. He immediately collapsed when his heart stopped. A woman, who happened to be a nurse, driving by happened to see him fairly quickly. She immediately called 911 and started compressions. Unfortunately, that wasn't enough. The ambulance didn't get there for what seemed like forever. The oxygen in his blood depleted and he suffered a severe anoxic brain injury.
He was air cared to University of Cincinnati Medical Center where he spent over a month. The medical staff advised the worst to the family. However, within days, he showed small signs that he wasn't ready to give up. Brain injuries are like the ocean- we know a lot, but there is so much more that we don't know and don't understand yet.
Nathan has several things on his side, one being his age. He's so young and his brain has not yet finished developing. This is going to be a long, long road, but we aren't giving up on him. He deserves to have the chance to fight the good fight. That's why he's currently in Atlanta. We knew not just any facility would work- he deserves to get care from people who specialize in the brain and see this everyday.
The family spends everyday making sure he gets the care that he deserves and being there for him every step of the way. As you can probably imagine, those medical bills are piling up. Nathan's mom is completely out of work due to being self-employed. Housing for the family is also an added cost. Additionally, Nathan also needs treatments that are not covered by insurance such as Stem Cell therapy and Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy. Money is the last thing they need to think about. Not to mention, when Nathan makes a recovery, that doesn't need to be something he needs to think about either.
Let's come together as a community to lift this family up and support them.
And don't forget to ask your God to heal this boy every chance you get!
Nathan is currently getting above standard care specific to his brain injury at Shepherd Center in Atlanta, GA
When we think about brain injuries, most people think of TBI. Nathan's injury is a different type.
We are fighting to get Nathan treatment with a HBOC. This is one of many things insurance won't cover, but we believes he needs to at least be able to try these therapies.
